A Healthy Journey Begins.....................

This may be a long post because I have a lot on my mind tonight.

I have an umbilical hernia that needs to be repaired.  In visiting with the surgeon, he said I should consider Bariatric Surgery before I have my hernia repaired.  He said the surgeons at St. Marks Hospital in Salt Lake were the best.  He asked me to attend a seminar there and consider it because it would be easier to have the Bariatric Surgery before the hernia was repaired and it could possibly be repaired at the same time.  I made an appointment to attend one of the seminars at St. Mark's.  I attended the seminar in late Nov. 2014 and thought it would probably be a good thing to do.  I came back and had an appointment with my regular Dr. and he said not to do it because he wanted me to try the old fashioned way first because a lot of people that go through the surgery end up gaining all their weight and then some back and he was afraid I would fall that trap.  I scheduled my hernia surgery for late March but gave up my day to my wife when she developed Breast Cancer.  With surgery and radiation my wife and best friend is a survivor.  My primary care Dr. decided he wanted to see me every week with my food journal.  After two visits his wife was transferred to Washington DC, and he left the clinic.  My new Dr. wanted me to try the old fashioned way also but after a couple of weeks he also left the clinic and I quit keeping my food journal.  My new Dr. wants me to get back to keeping a food journal and that means I will have three food journals.  This blog, on the fitbit site, and in my hand written journal for my Dr. to look at and comment on.  He also wants me swimming because he feel I can lose the weight without surgery.  He says if I am not making some good progress by the end of the year, we may revisit the surgery thing but he doesn't want to and neither do I.  Through all of this I have developed a blood clot in my right leg in October that we thought was gone by April but in May it came back with a vengeance.  The Dr.'s are trying to get my INR stabilized before I have hernia surgery.  I also have had to postpone my Colonoscopy because of the blood clot.  The swelling in my right leg wont go down and so I have a couple of appointments with specialist because my Dr. isn't sure that is just my weight that is causing the swelling but he wants me to lose the weight because it can't hurt.

So that brings me to today.  I have been asked by several people why I quit my blogs and the only reason I could come up with is laziness on my part.  A couple of years ago I took off quite a bit of weight and my wife, Vickie, thinks one of the things that helped was my blog and always looking for new, healthy recipes.  I will not be as radical in my eating as I was then but I will be using alot of the things I learned through that journey. I will be posting my food journal daily under the Food Journal tab, for all to see and hold me to the fire.  I will also be adding healthy recipes regularly.  I told my Dr. that I have been cooking for some fifty years and it is in my genes so I will not totally give it up and I will be posting regular recipes also.  My Food Journal will have the Daily Headings of Day 1, Day 2, etc I will also be posting thoughts, jokes and other things under the heading of Snack Break on my Food Journal page.

I will tracking my walking with my Fitbit.  My goal is 10,000+ steps starting tomorrow.  Right now I am getting just over 8,000 a day.  I guess I need to get moving a little more.  My goal is to get 60,000 - 70,000 steps a week and be in the pool at least 4 times a week.  I will be posting those stats daily along with my food journal.  I need to say thank you to Sheila Favero.  She has been very patient and encouraging.  I appreciate her encouragement.  But the biggest thanks goes to the love of my life and my best friend, my wife, Vickie.  I love her more than she will ever know.  She never gives up on me, even my half hearted attempts to start eating right.

This picture was taken today, 16 August 2015.  I am with me good friend Blake.  This picture will be taken every 90 days and posted at the bottom of this post.  (Blake is on the left)  I should have worn a coat to hide me my size a little.
